Smartphone Photography

So where does the Smartphone sit in the photography world ? There is no doubt that the technology and capability of the cameras in smartphones have come on in leaps and bounds. They are not a professional tool but they do have a place in the market, you generally always have one with you and they are ideal when scouting locations and as a compositional tool.

I recently upgraded to the Huawei P20 Pro which has been called by many the best Smartphone for photographers. It’s equipped with three cameras that were co-developed with Leica no less, a 40 megapixel camera, a 3x optical zoom camera and a monochrome camera. The smart phone uses AI to decide on the best combination of theses cameras depending on the scene you are shooting. The AI does however have a tendency to ‘over process’ on some occasions however it can be disabled and the cameras can also be used in full manual mode.

It does seem very capable for a Smartphone camera but is no replacement for a CSC or DSLR.
