Churches and their surrounding churchyards are places where history, architecture and memory come together. They have witnessed centuries of change, celebrating life's greatest joys while quietly marking its losses. Long after the crowds have gone, they remain places of reflection, shaped by weather, time and the stories of countless generations.

Photographing these spaces in black and white strips away the distraction of colour, allowing light, texture and form to take centre stage. Ancient stonework, weathered headstones, twisted yew trees and dramatic skies reveal a timeless quality that colour often softens.

This ongoing project explores the character and atmosphere of churches and churchyards across Britain. Rather than documenting them as historical records, these photographs seek to capture a sense of stillness, solitude and permanence. Each image is an invitation to pause and appreciate the quiet beauty found in places that are so often overlooked.

Whether standing in a remote rural churchyard or beneath the shadow of a village church, every location has its own story. These photographs are a personal interpretation of those spaces—moments where light, landscape and history briefly come together through the lens.
